Overview

A Painting is a projection art piece on sketchbook. Combining performance art and interactive art elements , A Painting aims to inspire people to think about the negative side of the freedom of speech. For the installation, a sketchbook is used as the projection surface.

Design Statement

While the artist is painting on the right side of the sketchbook, people could press the keys on the laptop keyboard to make somen mean comments pop out. The style of the comments is designed to simulate the style of Instagram comments. The painting on the right of the sketchbook is a logo designed to oppose cyber violence. The constant process of mean online comments pop out attacking the artist spiritually is meant to simulate the phenomenon that in a world with freedom of speech, people online just feel free to attack people. However, freedom is notn suppose to equal “unrestrained”. While we are expressing our feelings freely and giving advice to others, we could use words more easily acceptable, rather than offensive and cruel. This shows the basic respect both to others, and to ourselves.

Between

Overview

Between is a projection art piece on fabric. Switching pictures between paintings and corresponding real-life landscape, Between aims to simulate the mental process of artists while they are creating art pieces that refer to real-life scenes. For the installation, Between uses two white fabric hanging in a line.

Design Statement

The landscape photos are projected on the fabric in front. When the person walk through the front fabric, the projected picture switch to the corresponding painting that refers to the previous landscape photo. While the person walks through, the front fabric flies up, and thus the painting would be projected to the second fabric in the back. When the front fabric falls back and gradually stands still, the projected picture will switch back to the original landscape photo, and projected on the front fabric again. The switches between two fabrics are meant to better simulate the virtual switches between real landscape and their artistic perspective happened inside artists’ mental world. BETWEEN uses three comparison groups: paintings by artists Dai Shi, Zhang DongFeng, and Van Gogh.
